International students in the United States have many paths they may seek before and after graduation, and USCIS offers these many options. Professional success for these students can begin with Optional Practical Training (OPT) and can even lead to an H1B Visa

Optional Practical Training is a temporary employment visa, direct in relation to F1 Visa Students in the United States. This Visa allows international students to legally work in the US and train in the career field they have studied and specialized in, often for 12 months at a time, with a possibility of extension for qualified candidates. OPT STEM is also an option for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, that consists of a 24-month period of hands-on training in your profession.

In addition, OPT often leads to another employment Visa called the H1B Visa. This visa falls under the non-immigrant classification, allowing foreign nationals with specialty occupations the ability to work and reside in the United States for up to 6 years. There are many other benefits that come with this visa, such as immediate family being allowed to live with you in the US, and your children under the age of 21 being eligible to attend school.

One of Loigica’s Chinese Associate Attorneys, Tracey Chen, is currently an active OPT candidate in the United States. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University Law School in 2021, and in addition, has a master’s degree of law in Shanghai, China.
